Dr. Cole Discusses:
What is Botox and How does it Work?
Onabotulinum Toxin A or Botox is a natural, purified protein and neurotoxin that is used to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat other medical conditions such as Hyperhidrosis and Migraines. Botox Cosmetic is a safe, effective and proven treatment to smooth away facial lines and wrinkles.
The treatment involves a series of fine needle injections into the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle and takes only a few minutes. It relaxes the treated muscle giving the face a more refreshed and youthful looking appearance.
Botox works by blocking the chemical signal that allows for nerve impulses to be sent to the muscle and cause movement. Wrinkles I like to say are formed by life, as they occur as a result of repetitive creasing in the skin from the facial expressions that we make on a daily basis. Over time these wrinkles and facial lines can become large and deep. Botox Cosmetic works by relaxing these muscles that cause wrinkles and smooths out the skin for a natural more youthful appearance.
Most Common Treatment Areas
- Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines)
- Upper Forehead Lines
- Crow’s Feet
The most common areas to be treated include the Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines), Upper Forehead Lines and Crow’s Feet. There is virtually no down time and normal activities can be resumed right after treatment. The injection sites can be a little red and minor swelling and bruising can occur but resolve within a few days.
The results can be seen within 2-3 days post treatment but the maximum effect can take up to 2 weeks with the results lasting on average 3-5 months depending on the patient. Patients generally appear more relaxed and rested when the results of Botox become visible.
Botox Cosmetic is FDA approved for use by both men and women to restore a youthful appearance. It is a highly effective and safe non-surgical procedure and the gold standard in reducing fine lines and wrinkles on the face.
