Hair transplantation is a procedure that dates back to the 1950’s in North America. In the early 1990’s there were dramatic advances in both the procedure and instrumentation, that today offers women and men natural-looking results that are essentially undetectable. In the last 10 years, there have been more artistic and technical advances with the use of more and smaller grafts to make transplanted hair virtually unrecognizable from natural hair.
Not just for men anymore!
Hair transplantation is not just for men anymore! While men may be upset by hair loss, women are typically devastated by theirs. Over 15% of women experience noticeable hair loss that requires extra grooming time to conceal. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of female patients who are seeking help for hair loss and thinning. Women are now able to achieve the look they want. A fuller look can result in as little as one session, restoring not only the hairline, but self-confidence as well.
Follicular Unit Transplantation
Hair transplantation is a medical procedure that involves the redistribution of existing, permanently growing hair from the donor area, which is located at the sides and back of the scalp. These follicles are genetically programmed to continue to grow and are unaffected by the hormones causing baldness. Once transplanted to the thinning or balding areas, these hairs will continue to grow for a lifetime. Hair transplantation uses your own naturally growing hair. During the process, skin containing the permanently growing hair is harvested from the donor area, and divided into its naturally occurring follicular units containing 1-4 hairs. Smaller follicular units containing 1-2 hairs are used to create a natural hairline in the balding frontal areas. Denser follicular units containing 2-4 hairs are used over the rest of the balding scalp to create a combination of naturalness and fullness. Dr. Cole uses his skill and artistry to reposition these permanently growing hairs at precise angles with natural randomness to ensure that you can groom your restored hair any way you want.
A hair transplant from the Cole Clinic enables you to resume a full lifestyle with confidence. Using your own hair ensures that the colour and texture of the transplanted hair is exactly the same as your existing hair. You can wash, cut, perm, style and colour your own naturally growing, redistributed hair. You can engage in any activity such as swimming, working out, or playing sports with confidence. Your transplanted hair is permanent, and once it begins to grow, it will grow for a lifetime.
Medication and Complementary Treatments
Dr. Cole will also educate you about the effectiveness, limitations, and side effects in the use of medications such as finasteride (brand name Propecia), and minoxidil (brand name Rogaine). He will likely encourage you to consider one of these medications to help you maintain or enhance your existing thinning hair.
It is the opinion of Dr. Cole that laser combs and other low-level laser treatment devices offer no improvement to the fullness or density of thinning hair. While this laser light won’t hurt you, he believes they won’t help you either. Therefore, he does not sell these devices in the office, nor does he offer laser light scalp therapy.
Dr. Cole also feels that while many money back guarantee potions may make your existing hair look a little fuller or add body, any claims for the re-growth of hair are often misleading (unless they contain a Rogaine/minoxodil treatment component).
Dr. Cole will only offer rigorously, scientifically proven medications and surgical techniques to improve the fullness and appearance of your hair.
